Korean Drama Backstreet Rookie Is Evaluated Due To A Number Of Controversies

JAKARTA - Since its premiere, the Korean drama Backstreet Rookie has received many protests from the audience regarding several things. On Thursday, June 9, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KOCSC) or the South Korean Communications Standards Commission reported that the audience was evaluating this drama.

Starring Ji Chang Wook and Kim Yoo Jung, this drama was considered a controversy before filming. The age gap between Ji Chang Wook and Kim Yoo Jung is considered unsuitable considering that this drama was adapted from a webtoon with a rating of 19+.

Sexual scenes became the second controversy that accompanied the screening of Backstreet Rookie. At the beginning of the episode, a school student teases an adult for a cigarette and kisses it instead. There is also a scene where schoolchildren dance from below.

Plus the scene of a comic writer who draws sexual things and is shown explicitly. Backstreet Rookie received more than 6 thousand complaints from the public. Reporting from Soompi, KOCSC said this drama had received the most complaints in recent times.

The webtoon drama Backstreet Rookie, which is 19+, is not applied the same in the drama version. The production team instead chose to put a 15+ rating by inserting several scenes that were deemed inappropriate to be broadcast on television. In terms of rating figures, Backstreet Rookie also doesn't have a large number.

“When looking at the webtoon version, young girls are seen as sexual objects by men. Because the webtoon is used as the main material (drama), the drama has many scenes that accommodate girls.

Heo Mi Sook as the chairman of KOSCS felt that this drama could not be watched in a fun way if you saw these scenes.

The number of complaints made several scenes mentioned to be deleted in the streaming service version. Backstreet Rookie was bought for broadcast rights by iQiYi, a streaming service originating in China.

Backstreet Rookie tells of Choi Dae Hyun (Ji Chang Wook), a supermarket owner who meets Jung Saet Byeol (Kim Yoo Jung), a high school student. Saet Byeol wants to become a part time employee at Dae Hyun's supermarket. Togetherness that creates feelings between the two.

An entertainment should provide a pleasant experience without demeaning either party.
