Besides High Rainfall, Mentembu River Triggers Floods In Papua

JAKARTA - The high intensity rain that occurred in the Papua Province region triggered floods in two regencies, namely Yapen Islands Regency and Nabire Regency.

Apart from rain, the overflowing of the Mantembu River, Cold River, Wanggar River and Yaro River also triggered this incident on Tuesday, September 14 at 06.00 WIT.

The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Yapen Regency informed that two districts were affected, namely Kp Immandoa, Kp Manaini, Kp Rawa Gang 1, Kp China Tua in Serui Kota Village and Bawai Village in Tarau Village, South Yapen District and Anotaurei District. In addition to flooding, this incident also resulted in 2 units of landslide houses in Kp Imandoa.

As for the BPBD of Nabire Regency, 1050 families in the Yaro District, namely Yaro 1 (Jaya Mukti) and Yaro 2 (Makmur) were affected by this incident.

"Yaro 1 (Jaya Mukti) as many as 250 families were affected, while Yaro 2 (Makmur) as many as 250 families were affected," said Medy Tonapa, Pusdalops BPBD Nabire Regency via text message, Tuesday, September 14.

The results of field monitoring show that the current water level is between 40-200 centimeters. With this condition, the bridge access to Parauto Village, Nabire Regency is cut off.

Medy added that his party had deployed rubber boats to collect data and coordinate with parties related to flood disaster management.

"Because the access to the bridge was broken, we tried to cross it with rubber boats," said Medy Tonapa. Currently, the current weather conditions in the field are cloudy. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) also issued information regarding the forecast for the rainy season for the Papua Region, which is predicted to occur from September to November.

BNPB appealed to local governments and communities to increase preparedness for potential weather that triggers hydrometeorological hazards such as floods, landslides and strong winds.

The public can also monitor weather forecast information through the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and check potential disasters around the area through InaRisk.
