Klopp Confused Southgate Install Trent Arnold As Midfielder When England Against Andorra
JAKARTA - Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp admitted he was surprised by England coach Gareth Southgate's decision to install wing-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder. Quoted from Sky Sports, Saturday, September 11, Klopp did not understand the decision when England's match against Andorra in the World Cup qualifier 2022 European zone. In that game, Southgate put Alexander-Arnold on for 45 minutes as a midfielder before finally being transferred back to the full-back position. "That might happen but why would you want to make the best right-back in the world a midfielder? understand," Klopp said. The German continued that Southgate's decision showed that the right-back position was not important. Klopp admitted that he was still surprised by people struggling to make himself understood by Southgate's decision.
"It's as if the right-back position is not as important as others. People who say I struggle to understand how you think about it," Klopp explained.
He continued to explain the fact that the 22-year-old's position at Liverpool often changes but to make Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder is not necessary at this time. "If you look at our matches then we will see that Trent's position has changed. Not in all games but in possible matches, so there's no need at this time to make him a midfielder," explained Klopp. Trent Alexander-Arnold is listed as one of the best right-backs in the England national team and has been an important part of Liverpool's success in recent years. Alexander so far recorded 182 appearances with Liverpool and managed to contribute 10 goals and 45 assists in various competitions.
