Regarding The Tangerang Prison Fire, Yasonna: There Is An Addition Of Power, But There Is No Improvement In The Electrical Installation

JAKARTA - Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly said that there was no maintenance on the electrical installation at the Class 1 Tangerang Penitentiary following the provisional suspicion that the cause of the fire at the prison was an electrical short circuit.

"This case is still being investigated by the Puslabfor team and Polda Metro Jaya. We'll just have to wait for the results. Temporary suspicions are due to an electrical short circuit because there is no maintenance on the power lines," said Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly in a press statement at the Class 1 prison in Tangerang, Banten, as reported by Antara, Wednesday, September 8th.

He explained that the condition of the electrical installation in the prison had never been treated, so it was suspected that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit.

"There is an increase in power but there is no repair of the electrical installation. However, we are still waiting for the results of the investigation," he said. Regarding the inmates who died, the Minister of Law and Human Rights said the number reached 40 at the time the incident took place and another was on his way to the hospital. Thus, the total death toll was 41 people.

Meanwhile, 81 people who survived consisted of eight people who were injured and have received treatment at the Tangerang district hospital, 31 people were slightly injured, and the rest survived.

"We send our condolences to the family for this incident. We have met two representatives of the family," he said.
