Introducing BioSaliva, A PCR Test Tool With A Mouthwash Method Made By Bio Farma

JAKARTA - PT Bio Farma produces a COVID-19 test kit called BioSaliva. This real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test kit is used by gargling. BioSaliva is said to have a sensitivity of up to 95 percent.

BioSaliva functions as a virus carrier or detects Sars-CoV2 RNA that causes COVID-19 using the RT PCR method using gargled saliva samples. Thus, this test kit can be used as an alternative to the PCR swab test.

Bio Farma's marketing director, Sri Harsi Teteki, claims that BioSaliva is quite comfortable to use. The shelf life of BioSaliva can reach 2 years. Saliva samples can also be stable at room temperature for up to 30 days, at -20°C, and at -80°C.

"BioSaliva has also received a distribution permit from the Ministry of Health on April 1, 2021 with the RI Ministry of Health Number AKD 10302120673," Sri Harsi said in a statement, Sunday, September 5.

Sri Harsi said, this product answered the challenges of clinical laboratories regarding the need for testing with field conditions in Indonesia, which are generally far from health facilities.

"It is also hoped that the PCR test with the mouthwash method can contribute to increasing the national tracing capacity, especially for children and the elderly who need more convenience in sampling," she said.

She continued, in the future the sampling process can be carried out in non-medical areas under the supervision of health workers, thereby reducing crowds and avoiding contact.

The practical sampling process also allows the collection of very large samples without the need for additional medical personnel. Then, BioSaliva can also minimize the import of COVID-19 test kits.

"As we know, many products are still imported. So, for the research (BioSaliva) that we are doing, hopefully, it can be an option from the Ministry of Health for future regulations, this domestic product can be prioritized," said Sri Harsi.

How to use

BioSaliva is used to detect COVID-19 by gargling the inside of the throat. BioSaliva users are advised not to eat, drink, smoke, or using mouthwash for 1 hour before gargling.

Before gargling, BioSaliva users are encouraged to take a deep breath, then cough slightly to expel phlegm without expelling it. Next, put the mouthwash provided in the BioSaliva package into the mouth and start gargling on the inside of the throat.

Then, remove the mouthwash from the mouth into the container and mix it with the mixing solution that is also available in the package. Then, shake the closed container and the sample is ready to be tested in the laboratory.

Each package of BioSaliva contains instructions for use, one container of mouthwash, one container of mixing solution, and one funnel.
