Sterling Said, The 2020/2021 Season Began When Slaughtering Liverpool
JAKARTA - Raheem Sterling said Manchester City set a marker for next season with a 4-0 win over Premier League champions Liverpool on the evening of 2 July.
Pep Guardiola's men did not have significant difficulties from the Reds, who from the start appeared quite confident. Mohamed Salah et al playing for the first time since their first league title in 30 years was confirmed last week.
Kevin De Bruyne gave City the lead from the penalty spot in the 25th minute after Sterling was fouled by Joe Gomez. Then Sterling himself doubled his side's lead 10 minutes later.
England international Phil Foden pulled City away from Liverpool before halftime. And an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal sealed the Guardiola side's brilliant victory in the 66th minute.
"They (Liverpool) have been brilliant throughout the year," Sterling told Sky Sports. "We know we have to be strong because we want to play well against them.
"We did a test against the current champions and want to make points. We did well. The next season starts today, and we are doing well."

Foden has once again been instrumental in everything positive about City's performance. Sterling was impressed by the maturity of the 20-year-old.
"This is a team that is growing and changing," he added. "You can see the maturity Phil is playing.
"He's 20 years old and plays like he's been in the first team for many years. It's a tribute to him. Every chance he gets, he plays brilliantly."
