Two Shooting Incidents In Three Days Occur In North Carolina, One Student Dies
JAKARTA - Police in the City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States announced the lockdown of Mount Tabor High School on Wednesday local time, after gunshots were heard in the schoolyard.
"We and the WSPD have secured the campus and are doing everything possible to keep students safe," the Winston Salem Police Department wrote on Twitter at 1:02 p.m. Wednesday, citing Sputnik News Sept. 2.
"We are actively investigating what happened and will share confirmed information as it becomes available," the statement continued.
Meanwhile, Forsyth County Sherriff Bobby Kimbrough told reporters the student had been rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds but did not know if the shooter was also a student. He noted there were two police officers inside the school when the shooting occurred.
"Building, kids safe," Kimbrough said, noting they were figuring out where to detain students during the shooter's hunt.
At a news conference on Wednesday evening, Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson told reporters the student who was shot had died of gunshot wounds.
According to WXII 12, the high school resource officer reported to them at around 12 noon local time that a student had been shot at the school.
Forsyth Police said they had secured the school, but local residents in the neighborhood were advised to take shelter in place and lock and not open their doors.
Videos posted on social media showed dozens of police blockading the school grounds from visitors and trying to secure the area.
Police had directed parents to the Harris Teeter grocery store in a nearby shopping center if they wanted to pick up their children, but were told to stay away from the school grounds.
Separately, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said in a statement he had been briefed and stood ready to provide the support needed.
"We must work to ensure the safety of students and educators, quickly apprehend shooters and keep guns away from school grounds," he said.
To note, this is the second shooting incident at a high school in three days in North Carolina. Earlier, the shooting took place in Wilmington, where one student was shot Monday at New Hanover High School.
