Internal Investigation To Reveal Sexual Harassment And Bullying At Central KPI

JAKARTA - The confession of an employee of the Central Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) with the initials MS made the KPI move quickly to conduct an internal investigation.

The reason is that the employee in the visual data section admitted to being sexually harassed and bullied or bullied by a fellow co-worker who he said was more senior.

Through a chain message, MS admitted that he had experienced sexual harassment and bullying in the Central KPI environment. When talking to VOI, the victim admitted that this happened during the day.

"(Harassment occurred, ed) in the office environment. During the day," said MS starting the story.

Other co-workers, apart from the perpetrators of harassment and bullying, claimed to know about the incident. But they couldn't do anything.

"They are silent," he said.

MS admitted that he had experienced sexual harassment and bullying from his seniors since 2012. He said the perpetrators dared to sexually harass and bully him because they were considered 'cheeky' and did not dare to fight back.

According to him, the office has indeed taken action against the sexual harassment he experienced by moving his office to a safer place. He just didn't feel safe there.

"I can't take it anymore, Sis. I might resign," said MS.

Trauma victim

Justifying the chain message he sent to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), MS told how he had an experience that traumatized him to depression.

The 33-year-old said the sexual harassment and bullying he received began when he was often asked to serve his seniors. MS felt disapproved because he and the perpetrators had the same position, namely as KPI employees.

At its peak, in 2015 the perpetrators were abuzz with their heads, hands, feet, stripped naked, pinned them, and abused them.

"(They, ed) harassed me by scribbling on my testicles using markers," said MS in a chain message he sent because he felt it was his last resort.

"This incident traumatized me and I lost my emotional stability. How can this kind of evil harassment happen at the Central KPI? What kind of syndicate is the perpetrator? They even documented my gender and made me powerless against them after the tragedy," he added.

As a result of the harassment and bullying she received, MS's mentality changed and she experienced severe stress, humiliation, and severe trauma. In fact, he admitted, often shouted to himself in the middle of the night.

"The nudity and abuse were so imprinted, I was no longer the same after that incident, I felt I had no value anymore as a human being, as a man, as a husband, as the head of the household," he said.

This bullying or bullying then repeated in 2017 when Central KPI employees conducted technical guidance at the Prima Cipayung Resort. Around midnight while he was asleep, the perpetrators threw him in the pool and laughed at him.

MS admitted that he had reported the harassment and bullying he experienced to Komnas HAM on August 11, 2017, which was then responded to a month later.

At that time, MS said what he had experienced was a crime and he was advised to report it to the police. However, his report at the Gambir Police in 2019 was not received and he was asked to resolve the problem internally.

MS did do this and eventually the workplace was moved to a safer place. "But since the complaint, the perpetrators have ridiculed me as a weak human being and the complainant. They have not been sanctioned at all," he said.

Via e-mail complaining to Komnas HAM

MS's confession that he had complained about the perpetrators' actions to the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) was confirmed by Komnas HAM Commissioner Beka Ulung Hapsara. He said this report was made in 2017 by electronic mail or e-mail.

"It is true, the person concerned had complained via email to Komnas HAM in August-September 2017 regarding the sexual violence he experienced," Beka told VOI, Wednesday, September 1.

Furthermore, Komnas HAM stated that there were indications of violations from the analysis of existing complaints. So, said Beka, MS as a reporter is advised to report the harassment and bullying he experienced.

Beka hopes that KPI can take steps internally. "Then follow up according to applicable legal provisions so that the victim gets justice and is restored," he said.

KPI ready to take firm action

This institution claimed to be ready to take firm action against the perpetrators of sexual harassment and bullying against MS after holding a plenary meeting. This is done because they do not tolerate this kind of action in their environment.

"We convey the following, we are sorry and do not tolerate any form of sexual harassment, bullying or bullying against anyone and in any form," as quoted from a written statement signed by Central KPI Chairman Agung Suprio, Wednesday, September 1.

Agung said his party would take strict action against the perpetrators. "If (they, ed) are proven to have committed acts of sexual violence and bullying against the victim in accordance with applicable law," he said.

To find out the allegation, the Central KPI will also carry out an internal investigation by asking for an explanation of the perpetrators and victims.

As for the victims, Agung ensured that his party would provide protection, legal assistance, and psychological recovery. In addition, the Central KPI also supports law enforcement officers to follow up on this case in accordance with applicable regulations.
