NFT Fever, Tron Boss (TRX) Justin Sun Buys Tpunks Avatar For IDR 149 Billion
JAKARTA – Recently, the founder of Tron (TRX) reportedly bought a Joker avatar in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) worth US$10.5 million or around Rp149 billion. The avatar is part of Tron's original NFT series called Tpunks.
According to Bitcoin.com News, Tpunks imitates the success of the famous Cryptopunks series, but Tpunks resides on the Tron blockchain. Whereas Cryptopunks resides on the Ethereum blockchain.
The Tpunks series features 10,000 avatars, some of which are rare enough to be hunted by NFT collectors. The Tpunks project has skyrocketed and occupies the fourth position in the row of dApps as reported by DappRadar.
This is not Justin Sun's first purchase in the NFT market. Sun became an active bidder in the sale of an NFT Beeple called “Everydays: the Firs 5,000 Days” owned by Christie. The Tron founder has made a bid worth US$60 million (Rp856 billion) for NFT Beeple. However, he revealed that there was an unidentified buyer who first got it at a price of 250 thousand US dollars (Rp. 3.7 billion) at the last minute of the offer.
The Skyrocketing Popularity of NFT
In recent months, the popularity of NFT has skyrocketed in the cryptocurrency universe. A number of famous figures have been in the NFT world, one of which is the famous rapper Jay-Z. He partnered with acclaimed auction house Sotheby's last June to auction off NFT assets affected from his own “Reasonable Doubt” album called “Heir to the Throne.”
Jay-Z has also featured NFT Cryptopunks on his Twitter profile. This makes some people believe that the rapper has bought the famous high-priced NFT Cryptopunks.
The Cryptopunks project alone has already surpassed $1 billion, behind Axie Infinity and OpenSea. The NFT fever has also spread to global payment companies such as Visa, which have purchased Cryptopunks series #7610.
