Starting October 1, OnlyFans Bans Users From Uploading Pornographic Content

JAKARTA - OnlyFans as we know it as a paid adult content site, will now prohibit users from uploading explicit photos and videos starting October 1st.

Although the company will block acts depicting pornography, nude content is still allowed as long as the content creator complies with OnlyFans rules.

This change is of course surprising, considering that OnlyFans often sells adult content such as photos, videos, and sex chats only to their fans.

According to a Bloomberg report quoted via Engadget, Friday, August 20, it turns out that this is because the company is following pressure from payment providers and banking providers.

"In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform, and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must develop our content guidelines," said OnlyFans.

In the coming days the company will provide more details on the move to actively support and guide their creators through this change. Enforcing the new policy will likely be difficult for the company, even if all uploads on OnlyFans are moderated by humans.

For information, OnlyFans allows its more than 2 million creators to share exclusive content with their paying subscribers. Many of the top content creators on the platform, which has 130 million users, sell nude or sexually explicit photos and videos.

Many sex workers have also relied on income from these sites over the past few years, especially during the pandemic and it is more difficult for them to make money elsewhere.

As for similar platforms, Patreon also allows content creators to share explicit nude images with their paying subscribers. However, they do not allow pornographic material or sexual services.

Earlier this year, OnlyFans quietly released the on-demand streaming service OFTV that can be watched via mobile and TV, featuring sports content, cooking, comedy, music, and other types of content from their creators, all without explicit scenes.

This week the company has also promoted the OFTV service, underlining its move towards a cleaner future. OFTV is free to download on Android, iOS, Apple TV, Roku, FireTV, Android TV and Samsung Smart TV.

"We all want to give creators more opportunities to get their content out and more ways for our community to access it," said OnlyFans CEO Tim Stokely.
