JAKARTA – A man named Afek Zard was forced to receive a sentence of eight years in prison for the theft of his friend's cryptocurrency. Zard's friend also had to pay a fine for not cooperating with the Israeli police.
Launching Bitcoin.com News, the 27-year-old Zard was sentenced to prison as ordered by the Be'er Sheva District Court this week. Ynet reported that Zard stole 75,000 DASH cryptocurrencies, the equivalent of 22 million Israeli shekels or US$6.8 million (Rp98.3 billion).
In recent days the price of DASH is reported to have been on the rise. At the time of writing, CoinMarketCap reported that the DASH price is currently trading at IDR 3,345,377. An increase of 13.9 percent in the last 24 hours.
In addition to the prison sentence, Zard was also fined five million shekels or 1.55 million US dollars (Rp 22.4 billion). The maximum compensation of 258 thousand shekels is about 80,000 dollars (Rp1.1 billion). To date, Zard has not returned his stolen DASH crypto.
Zard is reported to have taken advantage of his friendship with the victim named Alexei Yaromenko, a crypto investor. Because he has a close relationship, Zard can access his apartment. Then he hacked into Yaromenko's personal computer and managed to steal the DASH cryptocurrency from his friend's wallet.
When investigated, Afek Zard denied the allegations. He also did not want to cooperate with the police in the investigation process. Zard also refused to give away his computer and smartphone passwords. Because Zard was uncooperative, the authorities were unable to confiscate the stolen cryptocurrency.
The court through Judge Yoel Eden has issued a decision and sentenced Zard for a number of violations such as hacking, money laundry, fraud, and income tax violations.
On the other hand, the prosecution has appealed to the court for Zard to get a sentence of around 12 to 15 years in prison for the theft of the DASH cryptocurrency. However, Zard's own lawyer managed to convince the court to reduce the sentence to 8 years in prison plus probation.
