Simeone Nets Most La Liga Wins Samai Aragones

JAKARTA - Atletico Madrid have again carved Diego Simeone's name into their record books. This happened when Los Colchoneros beat Levante on Wednesday, June 24 in the morning.

A vital win in the pursuit of a Champions League qualifying ticket is an important milestone for iconic head coach Simeone in La Liga.

The 1-0 win thanks to a Bruno Gonzales own goal was Simeone's 194th in the league as Atleti boss. This achievement equaled the record held by Luis Aragones.

After three consecutive victories following the resumption of football in Spain, the coach who won the 2013-14 title reached a total of 319 La Liga games.

Aragones - the club's top scorer as a player - served four distinct terms as Atleti coach. He won La Liga in 1976-77, but it took him 407 games to record 194 victories in La Liga.

Simeone has the chance to surpass Aragones' record when his side host Deportivo Alaves on Saturday.

On the other hand, Simeone hopes Marcos Llorente can continue to maintain high standards in his game. He again played a major role in the victory over Levante.

Llorente signed from their rivals Real Madrid as a defensive midfielder. But since the second half of the 2019-2020 season, he has adapted to a more forward role.

The 25-year-old scored twice in a stunning Champions League win at Liverpool. He has even performed brilliantly since La Liga returned to action amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the match against Levante, Llorente was the main brain for the visitors' own goal. This victory is the third in a row while bringing Atleti to third place in the standings.

"The facts speak for themselves," said Simeone. "There's no need to praise [Llorente] when you can watch his movements, his attitude, his pressure and see what happens to him.

"Hopefully he can maintain this consistency, because he works a lot. He's suffered a lot because he's played a little bit since he arrived.

"After seeing how he works in training, we tried to make it further away from the Liverpool game and we found the different characteristics of [forwards] Correa, Joao [Felix], [Diego] Costa and [Alvaro] Morata.

"He is an additional important player in the team."
