Johar Baru Brawl: Dense Environmental Conditions, Socio-Economic, Mutual Mockery Triggers Brawl

JAKARTA - Brawls between groups of teenagers continue to be repeated in densely populated slum areas of Johar Baru District, Central Jakarta. From the data collected, throughout 2021, brawls between groups of residents occurred three times in Johar Baru. Even the brawls, which are routine events, often take the lives of people who are not involved in the brawls.

The latest, a brawl occurred at the Paris City Bridge, Johar Baru, Central Jakarta, Monday, August 16, 2021. Ironically, this brawl between groups of teenagers broke out just before the 76th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.

Indramayu (51), one of the brawlers, died after being hit by sharp weapons by the brawlers. The victim was recorded as a resident of RT 02/06, Kampung Rawa Village, Johar Baru, Central Jakarta.

According to Mega Nilamsari (31) the victim's younger brother, Indramayu is known not to have been involved in the brawl between the residents of Baladewa and Tanah Tinggi. His brother was actually trying to break up the brawl between residents. The death of Indramayu left a victim's wife.

"My brother really wanted to separate, but instead became a victim in the brawl. My brother was hacked until his intestines burst open, then his beak was also torn due to a sharp weapon," he told reporters, Monday, August 16, yesterday.

Indramayu was buried at the Kemiri TPU, East Jakarta. The family hopes that the Johar Baru Police can immediately arrest the perpetrators of the brawl that killed Indramayu.

"We just leave it to the police. We will bury it at the Kemiri TPU, East Jakarta," he said.

Mega again explained, brawls at the intersection of the Paris City Bridge, Johar Baru often occur for no apparent reason. The victim is known to work as a motorcycle taxi driver who often hangs out at the crossroads of Paris, the scene of the brawl.

This social phenomenon has attracted the attention of a number of social observers. One of them emerged from the University of Indonesia (UI) sociologist, Ida Ruwaida. According to Ida, groups of young people were provoked to join the brawl as an arena for the existence of groups or gangs in the area.

The condition of low education and weak skills makes this group of young people vulnerable, marginal, and even stigmatized.

"This condition cannot be separated from the socio-economic context of the slum, poor and congested people of Johar Baru," Ida told VOI, Wednesday, August 18, yesterday. cross-citizen groups or cross "ganks" that focus on cultural arts activities and life skills training.

"Activities can be carried out according to their interests and potential, as we have developed, such as murals, music and others," he said.

The police were also asked to provide more intensive assistance, especially to groups of young people in order to minimize the recurrence of brawls in Johar Baru.

Mentoring is carried out considering the clashes between groups that occur every year involving the Tanah Tinggi Village and Kampung Rawa Village, Johar Baru, Central Jakarta.

"The police need to develop a preventive approach through intensive assistance to youth groups, because they are a vulnerable and marginal group," he said.

After the bloody brawl, the ranks of the Johar Baru Sector Police immediately took decisive action. Two of the perpetrators suspected of being Indramayu's slasher were arrested in two different locations.

The two perpetrators had the initials S and AA. Both have their respective roles in the incidents of brawls between groups of residents. Until now, the Johar Baru Police together with the Metro Jaya Police are still developing the case to hunt down other perpetrators who are still at large.
