The Chancellor Of IAIN Madura Forgives Students For Destroying Campus Facilities, But The Legal Process Continues

PAMEKASAN - The Chancellor of the Madura State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Dr Moh Kosim forgave his students for vandalizing campus facilities during a riot that took place on July 30.

"As the leader and the perpetrators of the vandalism are students themselves, of course we forgive. But the legal process for the vandals continues," said Kosim in Pamekasan, quoted by Antara, Monday, August 19.

He explained that cases of destroying campus facilities, especially by burning them, were against the law.

Indonesia, he continued, is a state of law, so every act of violating the law must also be processed by law.

In addition, the legal process for students who commit violations is also part of legal education that must be undertaken.

Kosim said that he really appreciated the various forms of student aspirations, because it was guaranteed by the provisions of the applicable legislation.

"But if you have done damage or violated the law, it certainly has become the domain of law enforcement officers," he explained.

A riot took place on the IAIN Madura campus on July 30, 2021, demanding a single tuition fee cut (UKT).

A number of campus facilities were damaged by student protesters, among others, the campus security post was burned and the glass in the campus hall was broken.

The police have named as many as eight people as suspects in this case. Five people have been arrested and detained at the Pamekasan Police Headquarters, including the driver of the riot, while three other students are on the wanted list (DPO).
