Cross Opinion Between KPI And The Ministry Of Education And Culture On Netflix On TVRI
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) recently collaborated with the on-demand video streaming platform Netflix to broadcast its documentary films on the Republic of Indonesia Television (TVRI) station as a means of Learning from Home (BdR).
The first documentary film that has been screened is entitled 'Our Planet' and was broadcast on Saturday 20 June. You could say TVRI is the first television station in the world to broadcast Netflix movies on TV.
But unfortunately, the program, which was implemented under the cooperation of the Ministry of Education and Culture, received a lot of criticism from various parties, such as the DPR and the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI). Critics say the cooperation between the Ministry of Education and Culture and Netflix is just a gimmick that is too market-oriented.
"We hope that through KPI's regular meetings with the Ministry of Education and Culture, we can optimize the BdR (Learning from Home) broadcast program. Not only through TVRI, but hopefully there will be the involvement of all private broadcasters, both television and radio, to be involved in disseminating learning from home broadcast programs. , "said Central KPI Commissioner Hardly Stefano Pariela in his official statement, Monday 22 June.
According to Hardly, the Ministry of Education and Culture's policy is to prefer collaborating with Netflix, which is an overseas streaming video content provider, rather than empowering domestic content creators and broadcasters. Even though currently, there are already several broadcasting institutions that have programs that can be adjusted in concept or new broadcast programs can be made supervised by the Ministry of Education and Culture to support the Learning from Home program.
"Thus on the one hand, students get fun learning materials, while on the other hand the sustainability of national broadcasting institutions can also be strengthened," he explained.
Not only KPI, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives Abdul Kharis Almasyhari admitted that he was concerned about the partnership with Netflix by the Ministry of Education and Culture. According to him, it is better for TVRI to cooperate with content providers for the nation's children.
Regarding Netlfix's own position, Abdul Kharis admitted that this was still being discussed in Commission I. Including related to regulations that became the umbrella in regulating Netflix as an over the top media (OTT).
Previously, it was proclaimed that as part of the BDR program and for the first time in the world, Netflix documentaries were broadcast through the TVRI channel, starting June 20, 2020, documentaries offered by Netflix that aired include "Our Planet", "Street Food: Asia "," Tidying Up with Marie Kondo "," Spelling the Dream "," Chasing Coral ", and" Night on Earth ". These documentaries have been broadcast in Indonesian translation.
