Check Out These 4 Reasons Before Using A Work Email To Register For Social Media
JAKARTA - Currently, not a few people use work email for their personal affairs. Actually this is not recommended, because it involves cybersecurity risks.
They consider using work email to register on social networks, online services, and other personal matters to have nothing to do with them or the company.
In fact, Roman Dedenok as a Security Expert at Kaspersky, revealed that there are many risks from using work email for personal purposes, including the security of employees' personal data and others.
Here are the reasons why using work email for personal matters is a mistake and dangerous, as quoted by VOI in Kaspersky's official statement, Sunday 15 August.
1. Make Profiling Efforts Easier
Before sending fraudulent emails to specific employees, cybercriminals will collect information online, using certain tools to learn which email address a person uses on social networks, online platforms, and so on.
Using corporate email for personal purposes will make it easier for cybercriminals to find your social profile, making themselves more vulnerable to fraud in the first stages of attacks targeting companies.
2. Providing an opening for Spear-phishing
Cybercriminals choose the tricks they think are best to ensnare their victims. If cybercriminals find out that their victims have used a company email address to register on another platform, they think it's more likely that you will be tricked by a phishing email.
They easily create fake messages masquerading as legitimate notifications from the service you signed up for.
3. More Chances of Mass Phishing and Malware Occur in Inbox
When it comes to customer data security, not all online resources are the same. Database leaks are very popular among mass spammers, who simply buy lists of email addresses to be flooded with malicious links or phishing messages.
Thus, the more resources you link to your company email account, the more potential threats that will enter your email.
4. Difficulty Differentiating Personal and Work Messages
Speaking of the volume of messages in your inbox, excessive amounts can cause new problems. With the volume of messages in email being so full and mixed between personal and work emails, malicious items become harder to spot.
The more private emails you read during business hours, the more likely you are to accidentally click on a malicious attachment or follow a phishing link.
Even if you don't use your work email for personal reasons, it's still important to take precautions against spam and phishing. The more layers of protection, the better.
