Charta Politica Survey: Majority Of People Want PPKM To End, Return To New Normal

JAKARTA - The survey institute Charta Politica Indonesia released the results of a survey on the public's views on the implementation of PPKM during the pandemic.

Charta Politics Executive Director Yunarto Wijaya said, as many as 20.8 percent of respondents said PPKM needed to be continued until there was a decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases.

Then, 18.3 percent stated that a gradual easing was carried out on the implementation of PPKM. Then, 54.7 percent said they wanted the government to end PPKM and return to the new normal. The rest, 6.3 percent did not answer.

"The majority of the community considers the most appropriate step after PPKM ends is to end and return to the new normal period by tightening protocols in each sector," Yunarto said in a virtual survey presentation, Thursday, August 12.

However, Yunarto said that this assessment does not necessarily mean that PPKM must end. What is clear, the main variable as the basis for determining the handling of the pandemic is the development of COVID-19 and minimizing the risk of death from corona cases.

"This is only one of the variables. In my opinion, the PPKM assessment should be below the scientific calculation variable related to handling the pandemic from a health perspective. But what is not easy is that most people want to end PPKM," he said.

Yunarto emphasized that the government should not take the wrong steps in establishing communication regarding the handling of COVID-19 to the community and still pay attention to the other impacts caused by the restriction on mobility.

"The point is, don't let the communication go wrong, don't let the persuasion go wrong, don't let every PPKM continue to be extended but there are no incentives that make people understand the consequences and risks faced by them, especially economically," he explained.

For information, this survey was conducted in the range of 12 to 20 July 2021. The sample was selected completely at random using the multistage random sampling method.

Respondents who took part in the survey were 1,200 people with a margin of error of around 2.83 percent at a confidence level of 95 percent.
