Landslide In Tarakan Causes One Resident To Die

JAKARTA - A landslide occurred in Selengkung Village, Central Tarakan District, Tarakan City, North Kalimantan, Thursday, August 8 at 01.00 WITA. This incident resulted in the death of a resident who was buried by landslides in his house.

A joint team from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Basarnas, Tarakan City Fire Department (Damkar), and the surrounding community evacuated the victims shortly after receiving the report.

"The team also carried out assessments and helped clean up debris from avalanches," said Tarakan City BPBD Prevention Section Head Boedi Soenjoto in a statement, Friday, August 6.

BPBD Tarakan City reported that landslides occurred after heavy rains fell, accompanied by unstable and sandy soil structures at the scene. In addition to the sandy soil structure which is easily dissolved by water, said Boedi, other factors are also suspected to be the trigger for the incident. poor drainage system.

"The soil is sandy and the drainage system is also poor. After it rained, the water then entered the cracks in the soil and landslides occurred," said Boedi.

Meanwhile, Boedi revealed that many settlements in the landslide location are indeed located below the slopes which of course have a high level of vulnerability to landslides and flash floods.

"The location is on a hillside, Selengkung Village is located at the bottom of the slope," he said.

According to the weather forecast issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) for the next two days, namely Friday to Saturday, the Tarakan City area is generally dominated by sunny cloudy conditions.
