Apple Gives Ashley Gjøvik Leave Indefinitely, Here's Why

JAKARTA - Apple has sanctioned senior engineering program manager Ashley Gjøvik on indefinite administrative leave after he tweeted about sexism in the office. Apple is currently investigating claims Gjøvik made about a hostile work environment.

“For months, I have raised concerns with Apple employee relationships about my years of experience with sexism, hostile work environments, sexual harassment, unsafe working conditions, and retaliation,” Gjøvik said in an interview with The Verge.

“I asked them to reduce the hostile work environment while they were investigating, and they initially offered me EAP therapy and medical leave. I told them it didn't make sense, and said they should talk to my leadership and set up controls and boundaries. I added that if there was no other option, they could give me paid administrative leave. They didn't seem to be trying to set limits and instead said they were putting me on administrative leave and implied that they didn't want me on Slack where I had voiced my concerns with certain policies at the company.

They also implied that they didn't want me to meet one-on-one with the other women at the company about their concerns with Apple's policies, which I did."

Gjøvik created an out-of-office message notifying his colleagues that the employee relations team had placed him on indefinite paid leave.

This is the second time Apple has investigated Gjøvik's claims of sex discrimination at the company. The employee relations team closed the previous investigation, having found that nothing was wrong. This prompted Gjøvik to tweet a screenshot with what he said was only a small part of what he experienced.
