JAKARTA - The United States recorded 734 deaths related to COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. This brings the country's death toll to 115,347, according to a Saturday tally by Johns Hopkins University.

A tracker run by the Baltimore-based university showed the highest number of deaths and highest number of infections stood at 2,071,782 at 8.30am, Saturday (0030 GMT, Sunday),

The US continues to register around 20,000 new cases of COVID-19 every day, and is working hard to keep that number down.

“It's important for us to remember that this situation is unprecedented. And the pandemic is not over yet, ”Robert Redfield, director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said Friday as quoted by Malaymail.com.

Until now, the US is in the top number of infections and deaths from the virus that first appeared in the wild animal market in Wuhan, central China.

Until now, many countries are competing to conduct clinical trials of vaccine candidates but the World Health Organization (WHO) has not stated that there is a vaccine that is effective in treating COVID-19.

President Donald Trump's administration has emphasized that even though there has been a new increase in COVID-19 cases in some countries there will be no economic shutdown if a second wave of the week appears.
