George Floyd's Brother Speaks Before US Congress Encourages Police Reform

JAKARTA - George Floyd's younger brother, Philonise Floyd, appeared to testify at the United States (US) Congressional meeting on Wednesday, June 10. At the meeting, he urged Congress to reform law enforcement rules that have implications for police brutality.

In the testimony held one day after George's funeral, Philonise shared his sadness. Moreover, when he watched the video of his brother's death on the knee of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police.

Launching Channel News Asia, Philonise said the reforms will stop the pain of many people, especially those who are vulnerable. "I'm here to ask you to stop it. Stop the pain. Stop us so we don't get tired."

"I can't tell you the kind of pain you felt when you watched ... Your brother, whom you have stared at your whole life, begged his mother desperately," Philonise said while holding back her tears.

Philonise said, Floyd's death should not be in vain. For that, he asked the Congress once again to understand the spirit of the solidarity movement around the world to end acts of racism.

"George asked for help and he was ignored. Please listen to the calls I make to you right now, to our family calls and the calls that are ringing on roads around the world," said Philonise.

Just before Philonise testified, it was the Democratic faction in the US Congress that expressed a desire to completely reform the police force in the US. They think that with reformation, racism that is rooted in law enforcement can be reduced.

Then, these reforms did many things. Some of these include a desire for US citizens to easily prosecute abusive officers, deprive police of anti-racism training, and prevent dismissed policemen from working in other districts.
