Romantic, Argentine Fencing Athlete Proposed By His Coach Amidst The Spotlight Of TV Cameras
JAKARTA - Argentine fencing athlete Maria Belen Perez Maurice received a marriage proposal from her coach, Lucas Saucedo, in front of television cameras at the Tokyo Olympics on Monday.
This is the second time Saucedo has proposed to his own player.
The female athlete, who was eliminated in the first round of her third Olympics, was disappointed when she was questioned by reporters.
Suddenly the coach appeared from behind with a piece of paper with the hand "Will you marry me?". The coach then knelt down until he looked up at the athlete.
"Say yes, a lot of people are looking at us," said the coach, as reported by AFP.
In 2010, Saucedo had already done the same at the world championships in Paris, but the results were not very favorable. At that time, Perez Maurice replied, "Is this a joke or what?"
But eleven years later Perez Maurice finally said yes.
"I can't say anything. In my heart I say 'Oh my God'," said Perez Maurice, who has been in a relationship for 17 years. "We will celebrate this in Argentina surrounded by a huge asado (barbecue)."
It was a happy ending to a day when she lost 12-15 against Hungarian fencer Anna Marton in the women's individual saddle.
The day before Germany's soccer team striker Max Kruse managed to propose to his girlfriend for marriage on live television after Germany's 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia.
