Bringing 8 Boards, Rio Waida Indonesian Surfer Athlete Born In Japan Focus On Competing Maximum At The Tokyo Olympics
TOKYO - Not wanting to worry about the strength of the opponent, Rio Waida chose to focus on his abilities so that he could bring out the best in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Since arriving in Tokyo on Sunday, July 18, Rio has started testing the waves at Tsurigasaki Beach which will be the location of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics wave surfing competition.
During the two days of practice, Rio had tested eight surfboards he had brought to find the best board to use in the competition.
“I tried several boards and already found a good board. Practice went well too. Today's waves are still small but before the match, there will be a storm, so conditions will be different. Now I try to stay fit and ready to compete,” said the 21-year-old athlete, Wednesday, July 21.
Rio qualified for Tokyo after the International Surfing Association entered his name in the athletes who qualified for the Olympics in the last qualifying round which took place in El Salvador, last May.
For this young man born in Saitama, Japan, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will give a distinct impression because he will be performing in his homeland.
Even though he admits he is nervous, Rio will take advantage of his experience of competing in international competitions so that he can appear independent.
"There's definitely a feeling of nervousness, but because I've been in many matches, I already have experience, I have to relax and focus on myself. If I can surf as usual, I can definitely beat my opponent. So I have to focus on myself,” said the athlete who now lives in Bali.
The same belief is also shared by the coach who accompanies him, Tipi Jabrik. Tipi is sure that no matter what the condition of Tsurigasaki Beach, Rio will be able to handle it.
“Whatever the condition of the waves, we have prepared a strategy for Rio because whether you want small or large waves, the ability is very good. Especially in Japan, the water conditions are neither too cold nor too hot. So Rio has the opportunity to perform well," he said.
