Dedicate Euro 2020 Trophy To Late Fiorentina Captain Davide Astori, Chiellini: We Want Him Here

JAKARTA - Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini dedicated the Azzurri's victory at Euro 2020 to former Fiorentina captain, the late Davide Astori.

The Azzurri lifted the Euro 2020 trophy on Monday morning Indonesian time. Chiellini dedicated the win to former Italy defender Astori who died in his sleep before Fiorentina's match against Udinese 3 years ago.

The 36-year-old spoke at the Quirinale in the presence of Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic.

"Dear president, allow me to thank you on behalf of myself and the team," Chiellini said in Quirinale. “Your presence is an important signal.

“We want to dedicate the victory to you and the millions of Italians around the world who never made us feel alone, accompanying us on this journey.

“We extend our dedication to Davide Astori, we want him here with us, he is always present in the minds and hearts of those who meet him.

“This is a group that never gives up, even in adversity, supporting each other and putting the interests of the team above the individual.

“If we are here today, it is not only because of the extra penalty, but because we are transformed by sharing our friendship, one of the most beautiful feelings in life.

The Juventus captain then named Matteo Berrettini, the first Italian to reach a Wimbledon final but lost to top seed Novak Djokovic hours before Italy beat England. Berrettini was also present at the celebration.

"Matteo (Berrettini), in the last few weeks you made us dream, we cheered as if you were team-mates. Do not stop. This bond makes us feel like brothers in Italy, ready for everything and for the calling of the country we love."
