Greta Gerwig Directs Barbie Movie Played By Margot Robbie

JAKARTA - Greta Gerwig was asked to direct the Barbie film, played by Margot Robbie.

Rumors of Gerwig with this Barbie film have been popping up since 2019 where he is said to have worked on the script with Noah Baumbach.

However, citing Variety on Monday, July 12, the news was confirmed after Robbie accidentally brought it up in an interview with British Vogue.

“People who hear 'Barbie' think 'I know what the movie is going to be like', and when they hear Greta Gerwig writing and directing it, they're like, 'Oh maybe I didn't know…” Margot Robbie said.

Barbie is an iconic doll from the Mattel company. Apart from Margot Robbie, no other cast is mentioned, nor is the main plot.

The Barbie film is Greta Gerwig's latest work after Little Women in 2019. Currently, Gerwig and Baumbach are working on the film White Noise, starring Gerwig.

If there are no obstacles, production of the Barbie film will begin in early 2022 at Leavesden Studios at Warner Bros., London. Barbie will hit theaters in 2023.
