New Cases Of COVID-19 Keep Recording, Muhammadiyah Doesn't Recommend Eid Prayers In Fields-Mosques

JAKARTA - The Muhammadiyah Central Executive will immediately issue a fatwa on the implementation of Eid al-Adha 1442 Hijri, one of the points of which does not recommend Eid prayers in the field or mosques/musalas in line with the increase in cases of COVID-19 transmission in Indonesia.

"The fatwa will be similar to last year (2020), which does not recommend Eid prayers in the field or in mosques. So pray at home. So this is in accordance with the principle of convenience, does not cause harm in religion," said the chairman of the Tajrih and Tajdid Assembly. PP Muhammadiyah Syamsul Anwar was quoted by Antara, Thursday, July 1.

He emphasized the fatwa on eliminating Eid prayers in the field not only in Muhammadiyah but also in Dar al-Ifta in Egypt. Because the law of Eid prayer is a muakadah sunnah and is not at all part of the obligatory prayers.

So, he said, there will be no consequences for those who leave it, only they will lose the sunnah reward.

“Since COVID-19 is now showing signs of increasing, the Tarjih Assembly will issue a fatwa not recommending Eid prayers in the field, but to do it at home. So, this fatwa will be stricter than the previous fatwa regarding Eid prayers," he said.

He emphasized that preventive measures in breaking the chain of transmission of this latest variant of the virus must remain a top priority. Syamsul quotes QS. Al Baqarah verse 195 which confirms the prohibition in Islam to make oneself and others harm and perish.

In addition, it is also based on the Hadith of Ibn Abbas which strictly forbids harm and causes harm.

"The fear of the virus is also in the context of fearing Allah SWT. Because Allah has ordered to avoid destruction and not cause harm to others. In the hadith it is also explained not to mix the healthy with the sick," said Syamsul Anwar.

PP Muhammadiyah's move is in line with the Emergency PPKM policy issued by the government to break the chain of transmission of COVID-19.

One of the points in the implementation of tightening community activities in the Emergency PPKM regulates places of worship such as mosques, prayer rooms, churches, temples, temples and pagodas as well as other public places that function as places of worship are temporarily closed.
