Criticized For Choosing To Play For Spain Over France, Aymeric Laporte: I Don't Care
JAKARTA - Aymeric Laporte answered the criticism leveled at him regarding the change of citizenship from France to Spain.
Laporte has represented France at many youth levels, but never made a senior appearance for the national team. In an interview reported by 101 Great Goals, he spoke about his happiness in making the right decision.
However, he also pointed out that some people had 'other goals' when criticizing his decision.
“If I was happy, as I am now, people could say whatever they liked; it doesn't affect me much," he said. "It happened at Athletic as well, where there were more people supporting than against. I felt every one's support and was very comfortable. People who treat this as if it is, it's important to have another goal."
However, Laporte was not clear about the 'goal' he was talking about.
"I do not know. Think about it yourself. You don't have to decide anything. 'I feel this', 'I feel that'. No, I feel both. I've been here eight years."
One of the insults leveled at Laporte was labeling him as 'a French player signed to Spain'. When asked how he felt, he didn't hold back from answering.
"They can say what they want, I don't care. I am here. I am pleased."
In May this year, Spain's Council of Ministers granted Laporte Spanish citizenship and FIFA approved a change of citizenship that weekend.

Laporte had previously claimed that "playing for Spain was impossible" and that he would not apply for dual citizenship.
Before long, Laporte was included in Spain's 24-man squad for Euro 2020. On 4 June, he made his Spain debut when he started a goalless friendly against Portugal.
Laporte scored his debut goal for the national team on 23 June, in the group stage in a 5–0 win over Slovakia.
Spain coach Luis Enrique said Laporte and Pau Torres were 'incredible' in their opener against Sweden.
"I have seen the two center-backs as sensational players, they are outstanding", he told Marca.
"They both played great."
Laporte is an effective substitute for Sergio Ramos who was kicked out by Enrique from the Matador squad.
