Germany Beats Hungary 2-2 To Qualify For Euro 2020 Last 16
JAKARTA - The German national team qualified for the round of 16 of Euro 2020 after reducing Hungary's resistance and equalizing its opponent with a score of 2-2 in the final match of Group F at the Allianz Arena Stadium, Munich, Wednesday, June 23 local time (Thursday, June 24 WIT).
As reported by Antara, Thursday, June 24, Hungary had a chance to surprise through Adam Szalai, and after Kai Havertz equalized they took the lead again through Roland Sallai.
Leon Goretzka became the hero of Germany's qualification with his goal six minutes before the break of normal time which made the position equal.
With these results, Germany finished as runners-up in Group F alongside France, which had already qualified for the last 16 before playing the final round.
Meanwhile, Hungary, which almost created a dramatic ash story, ended up staying at the bottom of Group F with two points, just two points behind Portugal, according to UEFA's official website.
Germany, who only needed a draw to qualify and on paper had everything to do with it, were shocked when Szalai found their goal in just 11 minutes.
Lots of possession, Germany conceded in their own half and Roland Sallai slid in a precise cross from distance which Szalai headed home to beat goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and put Hungary in front.
Germany tried to give an instant response but unfortunately, Leroy Sane was caught offside when Ilkay Gundogan sent a through ball.
In the 21st minute, Germany almost made it level with a corner kick from Joshua Kimmich, but Mats Hummels' header hit the crossbar.
The ball was lively and sent back into the box where Matthias Ginter met with a volley, but it went too straight into goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi's arms.
Hungary's 1-0 advantage was maintained until half-time and in the 62nd minute, Sallai almost doubled it with a free-kick that crossed the German fence, unfortunately, the ball hit the post.
Four minutes later the home crowd cheered cheerfully because Havertz was able to break into the Hungarian goal to make the position 1-1.
Starting from Kimmich's corner which Gulacsi missed, Hummels' header hit several players in the Hungarian penalty box but the ball fell in front of Havertz who only had to head into the net.
Unfortunately, the cheers of the German supporters were silenced again because from the situation of the host's goal kick, Hungary was able to immediately score another goal to restore the advantage.
Szalai sent a high ball that Schafer was able to chase to head it in front of Neuer who was already motionless. Hungary two, Germany one in the 68th minute.
Despite being in a pinch, Germany continued to try to appear calm and the result in the 84th minute Goretzka was able to break through Hungary to make the position equal again 2-2.
Starting from Timo Werner's shot which was blocked by the Hungarian defense, Goretzka grabbed the ball to beat Gulacsi.
Since that goal, Germany is increasingly confident in controlling the ball to keep the score 2-2 until the whistle sounds.
