OJK Uncovers Illegal Loans: Even Ghosts Can Borrow If You Have An ID Card
JAKARTA - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) continues to encourage the public to pay attention to the legal aspects of financial institutions when using financial services and services. This was conveyed by the Chairman of the OJK Investment Alert Task Force Tongam L. Tobing following the rise of illegal online loans (pinjol) that were troubling the public.
“This Pinjol is our collective responsibility so that it does not continue to cause harm. We at OJK together with 13 institutional ministries, work hand in hand to eradicate this illegal loan,” he said in a webinar held by the Berita Satu channel titled Finding Solutions for Illegal Loans, Monday, June 21.
According to Tongam, the public can easily identify these fake peer-to-peer lending companies. The reason is, there are a number of characteristics attached to illegal borrowing.
"First, online lending companies are definitely not registered and licensed by the OJK," he said.
Two, the tendency to borrow funds from illegal loans is relatively easy, namely only with an ID card (Kartu Tanda Sipil) and a photo of yourself.
"That's why we often say that even ghosts, if they have an ID card, can borrow money," he said.
Three, the illegal financial institution is also known to ask for permission to be able to access certain contacts and data on the borrower's cell phone.
"This is a disaster, the strength of this illegal loan is in the HP contacts," he added.
Then, Tongam said that the fee from this illegal loan was quite high and exceeded the interest limit provisions set by the financial authorities in the country.
“What the borrower gets is very inhumane, the fee is very high. In fact, there was a loan amount of Rp. 1 million but only Rp. 600,000 was transferred," he explained.
Then from the interest side that is not transparent, such as the initial agreement of 0.5 percent per day to 2 percent per day. Likewise, the tenor is often shortened from the initial agreement.
"Well, if you are late paying, then this illegal loan will terrorize unethically, intimidate, and even abuse," he said.
For information, in the previous report, it was explained that as of June 18, 2021, the number of online loan providers or fintech peer-to-peer lending registered and officially licensed by the OJK was 125 companies.
