Elite Limited Candidate Space Is The Reason For NasDem To Open Presidential Candidate Convention
JAKARTA - The chairman of the NasDem Party's DPP Willy Aditya revealed the reason his party chose the convention route to determine the presidential candidates in the 2024 presidential election.
According to him, this convention was held so that the presidential candidate promoted by Surya Paloh's party was in accordance with the wishes of the majority of the people.
"The nomination process must be accountable, transparent, and serve as a medium for correspondence with the aspirations of the people and the elites themselves," said Willy Aditya, Tuesday, June 16.
According to him, the convention is a form of screening that can open up space for anyone to become a presidential candidate in 2024. Because in NasDem's view, the discourse on presidential candidates that appears in the public is only limited to the wishes of political party elites summarized in the survey.
If there is no convention, continued Willy, the nomination space is only limited to three things. Namely, party elites, especially leaders, regional heads and ministers.
"If you look at the survey, three of them were captured," he said.
In addition, said Willy, the current situation in the election of leaders in Indonesia has always been trapped in the mere electability factor.
"We live in a discriminatory regime. The only element that becomes the determinant factor is electability. We don't see other elements that are quite important, namely capability and integrity," he said.
Therefore, Willy emphasized that NasDem is trying to absorb aspirations through a convention that will be held in 2022. The goal is to make the candidate leaders who are promoted truly have electability, equipped with integrity and capability.
"What is the space? The space is a convention, ideally the convention becomes an instrument that is required by law to every party. That's ideally," he concluded.
