Elected As GB-ILO Member Representing Asia Pacific, Indonesia Has Veto
JAKARTA - Indonesia has been elected as a Regular Member of the Governing Body (GB) of the International Labor Organization (ILO) under the auspices of the United Nations (UN) for the period 2021-2024.
Indonesia was selected in the 109th International Labor Conference (ILC) series which was held virtually on Monday, June 14 yesterday. In the election of members, Indonesia won 210 votes out of a total of 230 votes. Thus, Indonesia has the right to represent the Asia Pacific Region with Australia, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
"The election of Indonesia as a Regular Member of the GB-ILO is a form of international recognition of Indonesia's commitment to advancing social justice and promoting decent work which is the main mandate of the ILO," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, Tuesday, June 15.
"Indonesia has always supported the promotion of decent work as reflected in tripartite cooperation between the government, employers and trade unions who are members of the National Tripartite Cooperation Institute," the statement continued.
The election as a Regular Member of the GB-ILO, positions Indonesia as the coordinator of ASEAN countries in the ILO. This position This provides an opportunity for Indonesia to promote ILO programs that are in line with the national interests of Indonesia, as well as countries in the ASEAN Region.
GB-ILO is the executive body of the ILO Secretariat or the International Labor Office which consists of 56 countries and plays a strategic role in deciding policies, budgets, programs, as well as the election of the ILO Director General.
"As a Regular Member of GB-ILO, Indonesia also has voting rights and voting rights in various ILO governance discussions," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
To note, before being elected as a Regular Member of the GB-ILO, Indonesia has been trusted as a Deputy Member of the GB-ILO for the period 2014-2017 which then continues in 2017-2020.
"This reflects the trust of ILO member countries in Indonesia to carry out their mandate in decision-making at the ILO," concluded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
