After the NTT earthquake, more than 5,000 residents are staying in evacuation centers.

JAKARTA - More than 5,000 residents are still staying in a number of evacuation locations after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 shook the Nagekeo area, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Saturday, August 15. The disaster also caused 47 people to die and caused damage to hundreds of buildings.

Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Berton SP Panjaitan said, based on data updates until Sunday, August 16 in the early morning, the largest number of refugees was in Sikka Regency with a total of 3,356 people.

"A total of 1,356 people were displaced at the Samador GOR, while another 2,000 people were displaced independently at 10 points," Berton said Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, the number of refugees in Manggarai Regency reached 2,078 people. A total of 500 other residents were reported to have fled to Nagekeo. Evacuation also occurred in the affected areas in other provinces, namely Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, and Selayar Islands, South Sulawesi.

Meeting basic needs and logistics distribution is one of the priorities in handling emergencies. Especially in Manggarai Regency, survivors need a number of urgent assistance, including dozens of emergency tents, 30 tons of rice, medicines, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 folding beds (velbeds), 1,000 mats, clean water tanks, and generator sets (gensets).

The earthquake was also followed by 341 aftershocks and had a significant impact. Based on provisional data, 47 people died, with the most victims in Manggarai Regency with 23 people and Manggarai Timur 17 people.

The other deceased victims were recorded in Sikka Regency with four people, as well as one person each in West Manggarai, Ende, and Nagekeo. In addition, 101 residents were reported to have been injured with varying degrees of severity.

The earthquake centered in the sea also caused material damage in a number of NTT areas. Provisional data recorded 914 houses were severely damaged, 126 houses were moderately damaged, and 317 houses were slightly damaged.

Damage also occurred to public facilities, including 93 educational facilities, 36 health facilities, and 38 government offices.

Responding to this condition, the NTT Provincial Government is processing a decree to establish an emergency response status for 14 days. A number of district governments have also established emergency status in their respective regions.

Manggarai Regency has set the status of Emergency Response for Disaster for 90 days, starting from August 15 to November 13, 2026, through Regent's Decree Number 319 of 2026. The local government also formed a command post through Regent's Decree Number 320 of 2026.

Ngada Regency has set the status of Emergency Disaster Response and formed a Command Post for 30 days, starting from August 15 to September 15, 2026, through the Decision of the Regent Number 441 and Number 442/KEP/HK/2026.

Meanwhile, East Manggarai Regency has set the Emergency Disaster Alert status until September 4, 2026 through the Bupati Decree Number HK/141/Year 2026.

The joint team with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is still conducting a survey, data collection, and verification of the impact of the disaster in a number of locations. To support health services during the emergency, field hospitals have been established and operating in Reok District, Manggarai Regency.

In terms of mobility access, the Larantuka-Maumere land route has reportedly been reconnected and can be passed. However, officers are still looking for alternative routes because the land road access connecting Ende-Nagekeo is still cut off due to the impact of the earthquake.
