DPR Discusses 14 Bills, Puan Ensures Asset Confiscation Continues to Receive Public Input

JAKARTA - Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani said that the DPR and the government would focus on discussing 14 draft laws or RUU at the I-Level Talks stage during the I-Session Year 2026-2027.

In addition, the DPR is still continuing to prepare 43 bills. One of them is the Asset Confiscation Bill, which is currently still in the stage of screening public input.

"The bill on Asset Confiscation is still in the stage of receiving meaningful public input, so that it can strengthen the substance of the law and have strong legitimacy," said Puan in the Plenary Meeting of the Opening of the First Session of the 2026-2027 Session at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday, August 14.

The plenary meeting was also attended by President Prabowo Subianto who was scheduled to deliver an introduction to the 2027 APBN bill along with financial notes and supporting documents.

Puan said that since the beginning of the 2024 trial period until the last trial period, the DPR together with the government had completed 28 bills into law.

He emphasized that the quality of legislation is not enough to be measured by the number of laws produced.

According to Puan, the more important measure is the benefits that are really felt by the community.

"In every formation of laws there is always political dynamics, both between factions, between the DPR RI and the government, and in articulating the aspirations of community groups," he said.

Puan said the DPR and the government must find a common ground that ensures the presence of the state, the community's support, and the benefits of each law that is formed.

He also emphasized that the legislative process must open up space for public participation, have a strong legal, social, political, and economic foundation, and avoid overlapping regulations and the authority of state institutions.

Apart from legislation, Puan highlighted a number of issues that need attention in the DPR's oversight function.

The issues include the settlement of legal cases, relaxation of regional government employee spending, job expansion, protection of migrant workers and online transportation workers, forest and land fires, long droughts, education governance, layoffs, investment climate, and access to BPJS Health services.

The trial period I of the 2026-2027 session will take place from August 14 to November 9, 2026.
