Molinas Will Use Nickel-Based Batteries, Rosan Says Indonesia Has 46 Percent of World Reserves

CIKARANG - The National Electric Motorcycle or Molinas will be powered by nickel-based batteries. The government wants its production chain, from raw materials to battery packs, to be done domestically.

The Minister of Investment and Industrialization/Head of BKPM and Head of BPI Danantara Rosan Roeslani said Indonesia has a large capital to build the industry.

"We will encourage the use of nickel-based batteries for national electricity," said Rosan at the launch of Molinas in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java, Thursday, August 13.

According to Rosan, around 46 percent of the world's nickel reserves are in Indonesia.

Therefore, he assessed that the raw materials for the development of national electric motor batteries are available domestically.

"The ingredients or the recipe for this national electric motorcycle are all in us," he said.

Rosan said the government wanted nickel processing to not stop at mining materials. Nickel will be encouraged to enter battery cell production to battery packs which are then used in Molinas.

"We have technology, we have the ability, so that the work of the children of this nation can develop," he said.

According to Rosan, the domestic production chain is also expected to make Molinas affordable without sacrificing quality.

Molinas was developed through collaboration between the government, SOEs, and national companies.

Rosan said that about 10 national companies have met the criteria for the Domestic Component Level or TKDN set by the Ministry of Industry.

The companies will later work with LEN and Molinas' development team to build standardization.

The government targets that the products produced are not only competing in the domestic market.

"It can not only be a champion in Indonesia, but also a champion in the region, and even a world champion," said Rosan.
