Extreme Drought Threatens German Agriculture-Livestock Sector

JAKARTA - The prolonged drought that has hit most of Germany is beginning to threaten the sustainability of the agricultural and livestock sectors in the country.

"The ongoing drought is putting a heavy burden on farmers. They are in a state of anxiety, and many are looking at the coming weeks with great concern," said German Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer, quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, August 13.

Rainer said he had reported the latest situation in the agricultural sector to the German central government.

He explained that the impact of drought varies in each region, ranging from reduced crop yields to increased forest fire risks. However, the pressure is felt most heavily by farmers.

"The situation is very difficult, especially in the livestock sector," said Rainer.

According to him, in some regions of Germany, drought triggered serious disruptions in the supply of animal feed.

Europe is currently experiencing one of the most extreme heat waves in recent years, with Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and Greece being the worst affected countries.

At the end of June, French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard also stated that unusually high temperatures had caused significant damage to the agricultural sector in her country.
