Following Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo Gets Permission From Kominfo For 5G

JAKARTA - After Telkomsel, now it's Indosat Ooredoo's turn, which is sure to be ready to roll out 5G services in Indonesia. The Minister of Communications and Information Technology (Menkominfo) Johnny G Plate said that Indosat Ooredoo has officially received a Certificate of Operation Eligibility (SKLO) for the commercialization of 5G services.

"The Ministry of Communication and Informatics through the Directorate General of Post and Information Technology (Ditjen PPI) has issued an SKLO for 5G services to PT Indosat Tbk. Medan Merdeka Selatan, where Indosat is declared eligible," said Johnny through a press conference that was held virtually, Monday, June 14.

With the issuance of the 5G SKLO, it indicates that the facilities and infrastructure for the 5G deployment that have been built by Indosat are technically ready to operate, especially in the 1,800MHz or 1.8GHz frequency band with a 20MHz bandwidth in the 1,837.5MHz to 1,857.5MHz range.

Johnny added that this SKLO was based on the mandate of Article 4 of the Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Informatics No. 5 of 2021 concerning the Implementation of Telecommunications which is a derivative of Law No. 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation and Government Regulation No. 46 of 2021 concerning Post, Telecommunications, and Broadcasting.

"5G services are expected to develop in the not too distant future. And, will continue to be expanded based on market demand growth in other locations," said Johnny.

In addition to Java, Johnny said, later the use of 5G services will also be implemented in a number of places that are the main priority tourist destinations, such as Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Mandalika in NTB, Labuan Bajo in NTT, and Likupang in North Sulawesi.

"There are also manufacturing industry locations that will also receive 5G networks. And for the location, of course, the New State Capital in 2024," explained Johnny.

"5G is expected to provide services to support industry and society in the future, along with the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and IoT technology technology," he added.

According to Johnny, increased performance through high access speed, large capacity, low latency and high connectivity are the targets of this fifth generation technology.

Unfortunately, Indosat is reluctant to respond further regarding the issuance of this 5G SKLO when contacted by VOI. Previously, Telkomsel launched a 5G network in the country some time ago.

The areas that have been able to try out the new network include the cities of Jakarta, Medan, Surakarta and Balikpapan. Recently, Telkomsel re-launched 5G services in five other cities, namely Surabaya, Makassar, Bandung, Batam, and Denpasar last week.
