Spotify Will Mark AI Musician Profiles with a Special Label

JAKARTA - Digital music player platform, Spotify, has taken a firm step to tighten transparency and protect its platform from the onslaught of unverified artificial intelligence (AI) accounts.

Starting mid-September, the streaming service will attach a special label titled "AI Persona" to accounts that are suspected of using artificial identities or do not represent humans in a real way.

The implementation of this new label is designed to combat the proliferation of fake AI accounts and spam songs generated through AI music generators such as Suno and Udio.

The "AI Persona" badge will later be displayed clearly at several key points, including on artist profiles, search columns, and next to artist names in the song list (playlist).

The most significant impact of this policy targets the work distribution system. Profiles that bear the label "AI Persona" will be automatically removed from Spotify's main algorithm recommendation feature - a vital system that has long been the main driving engine in attracting new listeners.

However, Spotify gives account owners the space to independently identify and report their profile status as an AI Persona. For accounts that do not proactively disclose, Spotify's team will review and manually assign the label with the help of their internal AI detection tool.

This step was taken following many inputs from users who felt cheated by artificial profiles that resembled humans. The reason is that the Spotify management emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity and emotional relationship between musicians and listeners in the midst of rapid technological developments.

"A true relationship between artists and fans can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity," Spotify said, quoted by Variety, Wednesday, August 12.

"In the world of music, it means that listeners must be able to trust that the artist behind the music is the real person. This is becoming much more important than ever in the era of generative AI," he continued.

Furthermore, this new policy complements the series of updates to the security and transparency system that Spotify has rolled out throughout this year. In April, Spotify launched a "Verified by Spotify" sign specifically for human musicians, alongside transparency features that allow listeners to see the involvement of AI technology in the song production process.

"Listeners have made it clear to us that they don't like seeing an artist's profile that looks like a human, but then find out that the persona is an AI creation," the streaming service added. "This badge signals to listeners that the artist's identity may have been generated by AI and does not represent a real human."

Despite taking firm action against AI accounts, related to unauthorized vocal impersonation and mass uploads that are detrimental, Spotify is not completely anti-artificial intelligence technology. The platform continues to integrate measurable AI, such as the "AI DJ" feature, an AI-based interactive conversation assistant, to license cooperation with global music labels - including Universal Music Group (UMG), Warner Music Group, and Sony Music - to develop AI products that are responsible and respect the copyright of the music industry.
