Government and OJK Welcome Destry's Nomination as BI Governor

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto has sent a Presidential Letter (Surpres) to the DPR RI regarding the nomination of Destry Damayanti as the sole candidate for Governor of the Bank Indonesia (BI).

The application received a positive response from a number of government officials and regulators. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto expressed his support for Destry's nomination.

Airlangga said Destry had experience as a Senior Deputy Governor of the BI and was currently undergoing a second term, so that experience also provided certainty for the market.

"Yes, we support Ms. Destry because Ms. Destry has experience serving as Senior Deputy Governor and this is in the second period, and of course from insiders, so of course we see the market's response is also positive," he told the media, August 11.

He added that the positive market sentiment was also reflected in the movement of the rupiah exchange rate which was recorded as strengthening and the stock market moving in the green zone.

"The rupiah has strengthened and yesterday the capital market was also a green zone," he said.

Similarly, Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) Maman Abdurrahman assessed Destry's nomination as a positive step because it has attention to the development of the UMKM sector.

Maman said that during his tenure as Minister of MSME, he saw Destry as one of the figures at BI who had attention to micro, small, and medium enterprises.

"I think this is a positive breakthrough step because, as far as I understand, for almost 2 years I have been as the Minister of MSME, he is one of the figures at BI who is very concerned about MSMEs, meaning micro, small and medium enterprises," he said.

He hopes that the process of Destry's eligibility and suitability test in the DPR, especially Commission XI, can run smoothly and also expresses his support for Destry as one of the female figures who are considered to have an important role.

"Hopefully he will be able to be peaceful, peaceful and peaceful with Commission 11, we will continue to support him and this is a Srikandi, one of our country's Srikandi and we will support it," he explained.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) Friderica Widyasari Dewi also expressed support for Destry's nomination as BI Governor.

Friderica assessed that Destry is a figure who has been well known by the OJK and has a positive track record.

"We support it even though later the one who determines a lot is yes because in the eleven commission, but we strongly support Ms. Destry, a figure that we already know and her track record is also very good and so far her cooperation with OJK has been very good, we pray that the process will all go smoothly," he said.
