Workers Can Study Faster at UT, Work Experience Can Be Converted into SKS

JAKARTA - The Open University or UT opens opportunities for workers to pursue higher education with a shorter study period. Previous work experience can be recognized and converted into a number of semester credit units or SKS.

The scheme is part of UT's cooperation with the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers' Unions or KSPSI which was signed at the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Building, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday night, August 10, 2026.

The signing was witnessed by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto. The MoU was signed by UT Rector Ali Muktiyanto and KSPSI President Jumhur Hidayat.

The cooperation is not only intended for workers who are members of KSPSI. Workers from other confederations and federations can also take advantage of the program.

One of the pathways used is the Recognition of Prior Learning or RPL. Through this scheme, previous learning and work experience can be assessed to be recognized as part of the course load.

Brian said the mechanism could speed up the study period for workers.

"With this cooperation, it is also very open to past learning experiences from workers to accelerate graduation. For example, it should be four years, it can be three years only," said Brian.

According to Brian, improving worker education not only benefits individuals, but also the work environment and the company.

Meanwhile, Ali Muktiyanto said UT also opened the possibility of providing special tuition fees because the participants of the program came from an organized group of workers.

"Later, workers who enter college through this program may receive special discounts," said Ali.

However, the amount of cost reduction and the mechanism for its provision have not been detailed.

Present at the event were a number of KSPSI workers, including Arif Minardi, Idrus, Wiwit Widuri, Tamrin, Raslina Rasyidin, and Anna Sumarna. From UT, a number of vice rectors were present.
