Government Builds New TPST in Mataram, Processes 60 Tons of Garbage a Day

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is building the Kebon Talo Integrated Waste Treatment Facility (TPST) in Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), after the closure of the Kebon Kongok Regional Landfill which made the capacity of waste management in the region increasingly limited.

The TPST, which was built on an area of 1.48 hectares, has a processing capacity of up to 60 tons of waste per day.

The facility will later serve waste from Ampenan District and Sekarbela District.

The construction of the Kebon Talo TPST is part of the government's efforts to strengthen the urban waste management system while reducing the burden of waste that ends up in the final processing site.

The need for these facilities is increasingly urgent considering that Mataram City produces around 425 tons of garbage every day.

Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said the government continues to accelerate the handling of waste issues in accordance with President Prabowo Subianto's instructions, including through the construction of waste management infrastructure and the use of technology.

"In the future, we will turn the garbage pile into electricity. But more importantly, we will first change our culture. Stop throwing garbage into rivers and seas. Because when we throw it away carelessly, nature will punish us again, for example, floods from rivers, rob from the sea," said Dody, quoted from a written statement, Monday, August 10.

TPST Kebon Talo was not designed merely as a waste storage facility. The facility uses an integrated waste management concept, ranging from sorting to processing to reduce the volume of waste that ends up in the landfill.

The processing system is equipped with automatic sorting technology that separates waste based on its type, ranging from organic, inorganic, metal to residue.

TPST also utilizes Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) technology to produce alternative fuels from waste while increasing the recycling rate.

The main building of TPST is a processing hangar with an area of 2,592 square meters. The facility is equipped with an operational office, a weighing bridge operator post, a panel room and a powerhouse, as well as various supporting infrastructure.

The waste processing process is divided into two lines, namely the organic line and the RDF/inorganic line.

The distribution is intended to make the processing process more efficient and produce processed waste that has economic value.

The construction of the Kebon Talo TPST has started since June 12, 2026 and is targeted to be completed on December 31, 2026.

After it is operational, the facility is projected to have a service life of up to 20 years.

The construction of the Kebon Talo TPST is part of the Ministry of PU's efforts to strengthen basic infrastructure services, especially in the sanitation sector.

The government hopes that the existence of waste management infrastructure will not only help maintain the cleanliness of the city, but also improve the quality of the environment and support the tourism sector in Mataram City.
