11 Peruvians Killed and 114 Others Missing in Russia-Ukraine War
JAKARTA - The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday stated that 11 Peruvian citizens were killed and 114 others were still missing after joining the Russian-Ukrainian war.
In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said 31 Peruvians had been evacuated from Russia and 459 people had been officially identified as parties to the war.
"Based on official data, it is recorded that there are 459 Peruvian citizens who participated in the war; unfortunately, 11 of them were killed, 114 were missing, and three were captured by the Ukrainian army," said the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as reported by Anadolu (10/8).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated that the consular section of the Embassy of Peru in Russia was handling the repatriation of two young Peruvians who were having difficulties. In addition, two other Peruvian citizens returned to their homeland at the end of July after their consular procedures were completed.
The ministry warned Peruvians not to respond to false job offers related to the Russia-Ukraine war, given the risk of becoming a victim of a human trafficking network.
His party also reminded the public that residents needed official government permission to serve in the foreign armed forces.
The ministry urges the public to report human trafficking perpetrators involved in such activities to the Prosecutor's Office and the National Police.
The victims and their relatives can also contact the Peruvian consulates in Moscow and Warsaw, which handle consular affairs related to the Ukrainian territory, the ministry said.
According to Peruvian national media reports, families of Peruvians who joined the Russian army gathered in front of the Russian Embassy in Lima to demand that their relatives - especially the injured - be repatriated to Peru and that the authorities provide information on their whereabouts.
A family spokesman said they had received information indicating that at least 150 Peruvians had died, but stressed that the figure had not been officially confirmed.
It is known that the Peruvian government has asked for the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help track the whereabouts of missing citizens.
