US Senator Says President Trump Has 'Lost' the War Against Iran

JAKARTA - US Senator from the Democratic Party Chris Murphy said on Sunday, President Donald Trump has "lost this war" against Iran.

Murphy argued that continued fighting would weaken Washington's position while strengthening Tehran.

"America is getting weaker. Iran is getting stronger," Murphy told NBC, according to Anadolu (10/8).

The Democratic senator further expressed his readiness to support an agreement - even a "bad one" - to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Murphy said the cost of reopening the strategic waterway continued to rise as negotiations stalled.

According to a report by The Washington Times, Iranian officials demanded compensation, the lifting of sanctions, and the cessation of US military operations.

"This war must end because every day the war continues, America is getting weaker, Iran is getting stronger, and people in the United States are being harmed by the ever-increasing prices," Murphy said.

Murphy also said he would oppose funding to continue the war, but support replenishing US munitions after the conflict ended.

It is known that the US and Israel launched an attack on Tehran and a number of other cities in Iran on February 28, killing Supreme Leader Ayatolla Ali Khamenei, a number of senior civilian and military leaders, and members of the community.

Iran retaliated with attacks on Israeli territory and US-related facilities in a number of neighboring countries in the Middle East.

Following the April ceasefire, President Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding in June, paving the way for an end to the conflict.

However, the two countries again attacked each other in July with claims of violations of the agreement in the Strait of Hormuz and the end of the ceasefire.
