Eleven Dead in Three Cape Town Shootings

JAKARTA - A total of 11 people were killed in three separate shooting incidents in the Cape Town metropolitan area, South Africa, said the police, Sunday (9/8).

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said an investigation was underway into the shootings in the Khayelitsha, Langa and Gugulethu townships.

In the first incident in the Lingelethu West area of Khayelitsha, three men aged 25, 31, and 35 were shot dead, police said.

The second shooting occurred on Winnie Mandela Street, KwaLanga, Langa. Four men and a woman were killed in the incident.

Meanwhile, a third attack in Barcelona's informal settlement of Gugulethu killed two men and a woman and wounded two others, according to police.

SAPS said additional police teams had been deployed to the locations of the shootings, as well as to a number of other areas considered to have a high level of risk.

Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi, said the motive behind the series of attacks was still unknown. He appealed to anyone who had information to help the investigation to report to the police.

Dyantyi also announced a reward of 100,000 South African rand (about Rp100.2 million) for anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.

He said gang violence and illegal possession of firearms were still the main security challenges in the province.
