Police Chief’s Honorary Tapak Suci Induction Strengthens Community Policing

JAKARTA - Political and legal analyst and Executive Director of the Indonesian Electoral Institute (LPI), Boni Hargens, considers the inauguration of the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo as an Honorary Member of the Muhammadiyah Holy Footprint to be an important momentum to strengthen the synergy between the National Police and civil society.

The inauguration which took place on August 8, 2026 was considered not only to have a ceremonial meaning, but also reflects the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and community organizations in maintaining national security and order.

In his remarks, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo emphasized that the National Police and Muhammadiyah have the same spirit in protecting the Indonesian people from various threats.

"We have the same spirit and determination to protect our community from threats. In any situation, Indonesia can survive and continue to grow," said Listyo Sigit on the occasion.

The National Police Chief also emphasized the importance of maintaining social relations and building sustainable collaboration between the National Police, Muhammadiyah, and the Holy Land. According to him, this cooperation is expected to have a positive impact on society, nation, and state.

In response to this, Boni Hargens assessed that there were two important commitments reflected in the National Police Chief's statement.

"The first is the commitment to maintain the unity of the National Police with the civil society in the context of society-policing which is oriented towards creating security and order in the life of the nation and state. This approach places the community not as an object of security, but as an active partner of the National Police," said Boni, Sunday, August 9.

According to the political science and legal science academic who once served as a member of the Supervisory Board of the National News Agency (LKBN) ANTARA, the second commitment is to maintain national integrity in the midst of an uncertain global economic and political situation.

Boni assessed that domestic stability was one of the important prerequisites for maintaining the sustainability of development and economic growth in Indonesia.

"The transcendence of the concept of the National Police Chief is how to unite civil society and the National Police as an effort to ensure national stability in all aspects, especially the security aspect. That is something fundamental and most needed by the government today," said Boni in his statement, Sunday, August 9.

He explained that the society-policing approach is increasingly relevant in the midst of global geopolitical uncertainty and various economic challenges faced by Indonesia. According to him, a strong relationship between law enforcement officers and the community can strengthen social cohesion while building public trust.

Boni also assessed that the idea has a broader dimension than just the symbolism of strengthening.

"The unification of civil society and the National Police in a common security vision is a strategic step that is very much needed by the Prabowo-Gibran government, especially in dealing with the complex dynamics of the situation, both at the national and global levels," he said.

According to Boni, the involvement of community organizations in building community-based security can be part of a strategy to strengthen social resilience. The community is not only placed as a party that receives protection, but also as a partner in creating a safe and conducive environment.

The confirmation of the National Police Chief as an Honorary Member of the Muhammadiyah Holy Footprint is also considered as one of the markers of the strengthening of the community-based policing approach in the National Police strategy under the leadership of General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
