Barantin Optimistic that Indonesian Shrimp Commodities Can Become the World's Number 1

JAKARTA - Head of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) Abdul Kadir Karding is optimistic that Indonesian shrimp commodities have great potential to become the number one player in the world.

According to him, the implementation of technology, standard operating procedures (SOP), and the management of the parent and environment consistently become important factors in increasing the success of shrimp cultivation.

"If the shrimp is managed properly, Indonesia can become the number one shrimp player in the world," he said after visiting PT Boga Tama Marinusa (Bomar) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, quoted by Antara, Saturday, August 8.

The expression is not without reason, during his visit, Abdul Kadir saw firsthand the implementation of a shrimp cultivation system that was judged to have high standards, ranging from broodstock management, seedling production, hatcheries, to environmental control of cultivation.

He assessed that the system implemented showed that the right technology and governance can significantly increase the survival rate of fish.

According to him, the implementation of strict standards is one of the keys to ensuring that shrimp cultivation can produce quality commodities and meet export market standards.

In the hatchery process, the survival rate of fry reaches 95 percent more than the survival rate of fry. The high survival rate indicates the application of technology and cultivation standards that are much better than conventional patterns.

"Technology, SOP, the parent, it has an effect. Here the parent is guarded, the garden, the environment, and also the water," he said.

The head of Barantin emphasized that the success of the cultivation system would also help Barantin's task in maintaining the health and quality of fishery commodities that enter and exit between regions and countries.

"Our task as the Quarantine Agency is to ensure that all fishery commodities that enter and exit, both between islands and between countries, must be healthy, the quality and quality must be maintained," he explained.

He even opened the opportunity for this cultivation system to be developed as a model for the development of the national shrimp industry.

The CEO of PT BomarTigor said that increasing national shrimp production must start with improving the upstream sector. It is said that the biggest challenge of the shrimp industry is in the cultivation aspect, ranging from broodstock quality to seedling production.

He emphasized the importance of consistently implementing Good Fish Farming Methods (CBIB). In addition, business actors must also continue to update technology so that various obstacles in the cultivation process can be overcome.

Tigor also appreciated the visit of the Head of Barantin. He hopes that the visit will give encouragement to business actors and the fishing community to continue to improve the quality of the national shrimp industry.

"The existence of quarantine is very important for the fisheries industry, especially in preventing the spread of diseases," he said.
