Rupiah Opened Thursday Morning Weakened 28 Points To Rp14,893 Per US Dollar
JAKARTA - The rupiah exchange rate on the spot market opened this morning with a slight decline. On Thursday, May 14, the rupiah opened slightly lower by 28 points to a level of Rp14,893 per US dollar.
VOI monitored at 10.15 WIB, the rupiah was still moving down 0.22 percent or 33 points to the level of Rp14,898.
Head of Research at Monex Investindo Futures, Ariston Tjendra, said negative sentiment seems to be overshadowing market movements. This was after the Governor of the US Central Bank, Jerome Powell, expressed his view that the economy could still deteriorate in the future and needed additional stimulus.
"In addition, Powell also dismissed the Fed's support for negative interest rates," Ariston told VOI.
According to Ariston, the above could support the strengthening of the US dollar in today's Asian session, as a safe haven asset.
"The rupiah may weaken against the US dollar, but the pressure on the rupiah may not be big because many investors are still confident in the Indonesian economy as evidenced by the high interest in government bonds (SUN)," he explained.
Ariston predicts that the rupiah today will move in the range of IDR 14,800-15,000 per US dollar.
