JAKARTA - The installation of fences at a number of shopping centers or malls that have occurred recently has become a hot topic among the public.

Not a few people associate this with Indonesia's less conducive conditions and the potential for looting.

The phenomenon of installing fences by a number of shopping centers even received serious responses from various circles.

The General Chair of the Indonesian Shopping Center Retailers and Tenants (Hipp) Budihardjo Idudu, said that the changes were made to improve the flow of visitors.

"Yes, because the one who installs (the fence) is actually only one group, so it's not all malls. So, the point is that maybe the mall group regulates traffic for consumer convenience so that consumers don't come from anywhere or maybe they want to arrange parking lots because, on the highway," said Budihardjo when met by reporters after the Indonesia Retail Summit & Expo (IRSE) Press Conference, Hati Modern Retail Indonesia (HARMONI) Award and Shopping in Indonesia Aja (BINA) Year 2026 in Jakarta, Thursday, August 6.

According to him, retail actors must continue to maintain the atmosphere, so that the public continues to visit the mall without having to worry.

"So, if we make the situation must be good. We also continue to make events with the Provincial Government (DKI Jakarta) there is the Indonesia Retail Summit & Expo (IRSE). We have to make consumers or the community continue to be active as usual," he said.

Budihardjo also hopes that the issue regarding the installation of the fence does not need to be exaggerated. The reason is, if there are still a number of shopping centers that install fences in their mall area, it is only an internal interest.

"Actually, the fence, it's a thing for them internally, yes, not because there's any problem. My house also has a fence, yes, it means it's normal. It's just that this is the issue everywhere, it doesn't have to be like that," he added.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government confirmed that the capital city was safe so it asked mall and office managers to immediately remove the newly installed fence because they did not need to worry too much.

"Regarding the installation of the fence, I also observed. Maybe part of the concern, but later at the right time I will ask for the fences to be removed again," said DKI Governor Pramono Anung at Blok M Hub Jakarta, Friday, July 31.

Pramono highlighted the incident and reminded him of the protests and riots in August 2025.

He said his party would coordinate with the TNI, Polri and other law enforcement agencies to maintain security and order in Jakarta.

"Hopefully Jakarta will always be safe, comfortable and make everyone happy to enjoy Jakarta, like today we all enjoy Blok M," he said.
