Government Emphasizes that Protests are Protected, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs: Do not be Anarchists and Disturb the Public

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs (Menko Polkam) Djamari Chaniago appealed to the public to maintain order and not act anarchically when holding a demonstration.

This statement was made in response to the potential for demonstrations in a number of areas ahead of the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia (HUT) in August. Djamari emphasized that expressing opinions in public is a citizen's right that is not prohibited, as long as it does not harm public facilities and the wider community.

"Please demonstrate, it's okay. As long as it doesn't interfere with the interests of the people and the wider community," said Djamari at a press conference at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Central Jakarta, Wednesday.

Government Opens Itself to Criticism

Djamari explained that the government fully protects freedom of opinion and criticism from the public. According to him, constructive criticism is actually needed by the government as a material for introspection to improve the quality of public services.

"Even the President has said repeatedly that criticism is necessary, and we believe that such criticisms are very refreshing for us," he said.

Threat of Strict Sanctions for Rioters

Although guaranteeing freedom of opinion, Djamari reminded that demonstrations should not be marred by acts of vandalism, burning of public facilities, or other criminal acts.

He ensured that the police and the prosecutor's office would not hesitate to take firm legal steps if the demonstration led to anarchist actions or criminal offenses.

"Even if later such things happen and fall into the category of criminal offenses, we have just talked to the National Police Chief and the Attorney General, we will definitely take action," said Djamari closing his statement.
