Three Female Lions in Japan Died Due to Extreme Heat

JAKARTA - Three female lions at the Tokyo Tama Zoo in Japan died in the past week allegedly due to extreme heat.

"The postmortem examination revealed that the three animals suffered from systemic dehydration and the failure of several organs. We believe that hot weather also had an impact on their condition," according to a statement from the Tama Zoo, as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Wednesday, August 5.

Since mid-July, many of the zoo's lions have shown signs of weakness and loss of appetite.

On July 22, 10 of the 16 lions needed treatment, some of which deteriorated to the point of losing their appetite, so they were unable to stand up and fainted.

Although cooling measures, fluid therapy, and treatment have been carried out; the zoo said three lions eventually died.

The lion was Mugi, three years old, died on July 28, Ichigo, 11 years old, died on July 31, and Luen, 15 years old, died on August 2. It is also said that there are three other lions still in critical condition and unable to stand, while the other four have improved.

Since July 23, the zoo has stopped and will not continue the lion show. It is known that the Tama Zoo currently has 13 lions.
