PPATK Reveals Online Gambling Deposits During the 2026 World Cup Reached IDR 1.02 Trillion

JAKARTA - The Financial Transaction Reporting and Analysis Center (PPATK) revealed a spike in transaction activity related to online gambling (judol) during the 2026 World Cup. In the period from mid-June to July 2026, the total deposit detected reached IDR 1.02 trillion with a transaction frequency of 6,001,352 times.

The data was conveyed by PPATK through an analysis of financial transactions infographic which showed that the momentum of the World Cup was used by the online gambling network to increase football betting activities. In addition to recording large deposit values, PPATK also temporarily stopped 2,815 accounts suspected of being related to online gambling activities with a total balance of Rp325.43 billion.

PPATK Head Ivan Yustiavandana said the spike in transactions during the World Cup showed how online gambling perpetrators took advantage of big match moments to attract more players. Therefore, PPATK continues to strengthen monitoring of suspicious transaction patterns.

PPATK also compared the data for Semester I 2025 with Semester I 2026. The result, the turnover of online gambling funds decreased from Rp. 99.68 trillion to Rp. 86.82 trillion or decreased by around 12.9 percent. However, the number of transactions actually jumped sharply from 174.90 million to 467.32 million transactions or increased by 167.2 percent.

Meanwhile, total deposits increased from Rp17.50 trillion to Rp22.05 trillion or up 26 percent. The frequency of deposits also jumped from 94.50 million to 226.76 million transactions, an increase of around 140 percent.

According to PPATK, the increase in transaction frequency does not necessarily indicate an increase in online gambling activities alone. The surge also reflects the increasingly optimal ability to detect suspicious financial transactions as well as increased active participation by reporting parties.

On the other hand, the online gambling network is said to continue to change the transaction pattern by breaking the nominal into smaller ones, but it is done more often so that it is more difficult to be detected by the surveillance system.

In the analysis of Semester I 2026, QRIS became the most widely used payment channel to make online gambling deposits. The transaction value through QRIS reached IDR 12.36 trillion or around 56.04 percent of the total deposit nominal. In terms of frequency, 198.77 million transactions were recorded, equivalent to 87.66 percent of all deposit transactions.

Meanwhile, transactions through banking and digital wallets (e-wallet) reached IDR 9.69 trillion with a frequency of 27.99 million transactions.

Ivan emphasized that QRIS is not the cause of the proliferation of online gambling. According to him, QRIS is a legitimate payment system and provides great benefits to the community. The problem that must be eradicated is the misuse of merchants, identities, and transaction purposes by online gambling networks.

"QRIS has great benefits for the community's economy. What must be fought is not the payment technology, but those who misuse it to disguise illegal transactions," said Ivan Yustiavandana.
